                             2012 OVERALL REVIEW

 SUMMARY

Coming back to graphic design for the second year was interesting to see what new challenges  we would be learning, last years class was very interesting with field trips out to photography exhibitions, and print museums.

This has giving great foundation, for the second year as you only notice when gining an assignment how to approach it in the correct manner, i.e typefaces, correct alignment, font colour, spacing etc.

As for the graphic, what photo should be used , how do the colours blend, is the contrast going to work between different layers that might be used in a composition.

In the second year of graphic design I found myself, making quicker decisions for projects such as logos, billboard art, typeface art, and advertising campaigns, I was able to implement much stronger
graphic, make better blends in Adobe photoshop, and Illustrator, in fact I felt much more comfortable using the software and was very satisfied with some of the results that I personally achieved, of course there is still a while to go before the course ends and there s plenty of room for improvement which I look forward to in 2013...........

BRIEF 9 ADVERTISEMENT LAYOUT

For this exercise I had to design a sensitive or personal product,  the choices were diarrhea tablets, Hair restorer, poopa scoopa, jock straps, condoms, or padded bra. I hope its obvious what I have chosen and the magazine I choose for this advertisement was Easy Health, its an Irish magazine published in Dalkey, Co Dublin.

After first sketching up many ideas, I looked for some photographs that would suit and came across three photo,s in google images the first was the muddy shoes, this was found under mud floods, the second image was the dry ground (cracked earth), the third image was stand alone flower, the fourth the tablet which is my own image all are of high resolution,
The image of the cracked ground was set to black and white in Adobe photoshop, a mask had been used for the soiled shoes, with blends of opacity around the shoes for to mix with the ground area.

The flower gives hope to the overall message, as well as advertising the fact that plant extracts are used in the product, the tablet is then cracked open and its contents are made to look as if plant and tablet are of same substance.

The font name for product was used  since it had a plant like form and colour was carefully chosen.

  1.  Font:         Tempus Sans ITC, regular 60pt
  2. colour        #77bf8d
The font used for the advertising text had to be clear and strong  I choose Frank Ruehl 36point with a bevel & emboss with stroke weight of 10 points...

BRIEF 8 BILLBOARD DESIGN

Hi this is just practice advertisement with some of my own photography, which I placed in the Smirnoff bottle , its from a wedding I had previously photographed earlier this year, The background image is shown in black and white  reveling a sense of loneliness  In this blog I give to more examples of advertising contrast using the Smirnoff bottle, all work is done in adobe photoshop using layer masks and blending techniques.

In this example I use the same principle I like the contrast between colour and black and white                photography, the black and white image is taken from google images as a high res since I couldn't find anything I liked from what I had myself, the image in the bottle is my own and is taken from a number of images put together using adobe  photoshop, by using transparency and layer blends notice the eye in the flower.

Here I show one more example from a smokey winter city of Toronto, to a beautiful small harbour in Ireland all work is done for billboard advertisement using Adobe photoshop.

BRIEF 7 CORPORATE IDENTITY
LOGO DESIGN 2
Hello again, this is my second logo created for a company manufacturing wall fixings (nails, screws, adhesives, etc). The company wants to portray itself as a marker of quality, meaning its reliable and may not be the cheapest on the shelf. the company aims its products to the DIY market as well as builder providers.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION.
The colour chosen for the logo was a yellow to gold gradient, and a thick blue stroke which I named construction blue, these colours represent the quality of the product and portrays the product towards  a masculine market of construction both colours harmonise  as it forms the letter 'G',
The screw was created in Adobe Illustrator, using the same gradient, along with shapes and effects to make the jagged edges of the screw. The screw also symbolizes the Letter 'I' as it pins down the 'G' formation.
The font I chose was gabriloa, and by using the character panel in illustrator, grip needed to show strength,
and the word tight needed to be displayed thinner and closer together were the screw pins the forming logo to the surface.

Colours used # 0359A5
                     #0468A5
                     #F2F2F2
                     #F2BB57
                     #F2BA76

BRIEF 5 SPAR SHOPPING BAG

Hi, personal shopping bags  have become very popular since a young woman made headlines by creating her own ideas on to shopping bags to make them less dull, by using her own type of art, she eventually caught the attention of celebrities, who liked her designs in turn this became a trend, and the young woman found herself with a  great business, creating employment and making a fortune.

Here is a Design I have created for Spar Shopping Center, the colour tones match and blend very well
this also means that the bag can suit colours surrounding it, but will also stand out to display its message.
The Eggs on the bag have a special effect blend, which makes a smooth contrast into the black background,
and gives the illusion of a normal curved egg displaying what Spar is all about.
The cracked Eggs show the name of spar in all its glory as a fresh supplying supermarket.

BRIEF 3 POETRY IN MOTION

  Hello again,

The dictionary defines poetry as writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in a language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm. Poetry enables our society to express and reveal personal and universal aspects of the human experience. as such, poetry can evoke vivid images and Strong emotion making it the perfect content for expressive typographic experimentation.

In this exercise, I choose the theme song from Jim Morrison (The Doors), Riders on the storm, and just taught up an image which I could express through typography, firstly using an A4 sheet of paper and  pencil I sketched an Image of a horse posing in a sort of a trot stance, making sure that the main lines that would shape the horse, (tail, mane, eye area, hoofs, etc.) were correctly displayed.

On completion of sketch, I decided to work with adobe illustrator using the pen tool to outline my image, once completed I followed with the type on a path tool, by typing the first verse of the lyric experimenting with different font sizes and type, for the definition lines of the horse, the same method was used throughout the design, using separate sections of layers, at this point I could manipulate lines of type using effects like ark, warp, bend, skew, which changes the distortion of a path.

I decided to add a cross to the design using some of the above methods and here is my final design.

BRIEF 2 SELF PORTRAIT TYPOGRAPHY

FACE PORTRAIT

Here is a face portrait using typography, to display outlines and over all characteristics,
of a self portrait, this particular portrait was constructed from my blog photo, which was opened in photoshop, by duplicating the shot into a new layer and setting the opacity level to 20percent of the original photo I was able to trace lines of the face and neck area by using the pen tool, to create a work path were I could then use the type tool write on path selected, I followed through with this method, to trace all outline using random taught out text some of which reflects my personality.

The end result was to delete the original and keep my new layer to display the end type portrait.

BRIEF 1 SHAPING AN OBJECT

SHAPE TEXT by Paul Keegan

Hi and welcome to my blog site here I will be demonstrating some of my art work while with S.C.D college of Dun Loaghaire. Our first assignment is to use typography and form it into a shape, the exercise might seem an easy task when you think of it , but actually its takes a bit of practice to get it right,

The software I will be using is Adobe Illustrator, and the tools mostly used for this exercise is the pen tool, type on a path tool, plus the various selection tools available , as well as plenty of patience, the exercise took me approximately 1hour and fiftheen minutes to do.
